Cumbrian man groped stranger on London to Glasgow train

A man groped a stranger on a train and tried to kiss her as she hid behind a blanket.

Michael Delaney will have to sign the sex offenders’ register after committing the crime, which has left his victim reluctant to sit next to men on public transport.

The offence happened while the 32-year-old was travelling on the London to Glasgow sleeper train near Carlisle on March 27.

The city’s magistrates’ court was told the victim had seen Delaney standing on a platform at London Euston looking confused.

She gave him some advice on getting a ticket and then boarded her train. Diane Jackson, prosecuting, said the pair entered into a conversation and Delaney, of William Morris Avenue, Cleator Moor, went to the dining carriage for a bottle of wine, which the two shared.

The woman only had one glass of wine. Delaney had the rest, along with three other bottles. When he returned from this final trip, he sat beside the woman.

Delaney then tried to hug and kiss her but the woman resisted, pushing him away by the shoulder.

She then turned towards the window, covered her herself with a blanket and pretended to be asleep, thinking this would deter Delaney. But instead he groped her.

The woman then got out of her seat, stepping over his legs and made her way to the dining carriage, where she stayed for the rest of the journey.

Ryan Foley, for Delaney, said his client had “not insignificant mental health issues” and regretted his actions. “All he can do is apologise,” he said.

Magistrates gave Delaney, who had pleaded guilty to a charge of sexual assault, a 36-month community order and ordered him to carry out 40 hours of unpaid work. He will have to sign the Sex Offenders’ Registers.

Delaney was also ordered to pay £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.
