John Jenkin, 24, of Newton Street, Millom, killed his mum, Alice McMeekin, 58, and his 20-year-old sister Katie in their home on June 8 last year.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment at Preston Crown Court on March 28, and a hospital order for Ashworth Psychiatric Hospital in Merseyside was imposed for a minimum of 12 years.

But a sentence review hearing yesterday at Preston Crown Court ruled Jenkin will now serve a specified minimum term of six years.

After the six years, the case will be reviewed and it will be determined if Jenkin can be transferred to prison.

He was not in court for the hearing.

He admitted two counts of manslaughter last month.

He was originally charged with murder but guilty pleas for manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility were accepted by the prosecution.

Preston Crown Court was told Jenkin had killed his mother and sister with an axe and had raped his sister.

Police were called to the house and found the bodies of his mother and sister with extremely severe head injuries.

In a psychiatrist’s report, Jenkin said God and the Devil had spoken to him.
