Credit card nightmare at Cumbrian petrol station

Customers were forced to return to a petrol station today to pay for fuel they used last night after their cards were refused.

Millions of shoppers across the country who bank with NatWest and RBS were unable to use their credit cards after technical glitches struck.

At Whitehaven’s Esso service station many customers were unable to pay for fuel and were told to return today.

A spokesman at the Corkickle garage said they were “extremely busy” this morning as customers returned.

“It was a big problem for us,” he said. “People were trying to pay with their cards but they couldn’t. “
