Christmas survival guide: Essential information for the festive seson

All your essential information for services over the festive period is here.

CARLISLE CITY COUNCIL

OFFICE CLOSURE DATES
The Civic Centre will be closed between Christmas Day and December 27 and on New Year’s Day. The customer contact centre will close at 3pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

BEREAVEMENT SERVICES
Carlisle Crematorium will be open between 8.30am and 4.30pm on December 23, 24, 27, 30 and 31. On December 25, 26, 28, 29 and January 1 it will be open from 1pm until 4.30pm. Normal hours resume on January 2.
The bereavement services department will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, but will be open from 8am until 4.30pm on December 23. 24, 27, 30 and 31. No burials will take place on December 27.

REFUSE AND RECYCLING
There will be some changes to the days you need to put out refuse (wheeled bins and purple sacks) and kerbside recycling over Christmas and New Year.
Collection dates are two days later than normal for those who should have their bins emptied on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday next week (December 25, 26 and 27) and a day later for those due for collection on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday the following week (January 1, 2 and 3).
Collections return to normal on Monday, January 6.

TO HAVE A GREEN CHRISTMAS
If you have a Greenbox you can recycle the following items at the kerbside or at a local recycling point: wrapping paper, Christmas cards, clean and empty glass bottles and jars, and clean and empty drinks and food cans and empty aerosol cans.
You can recycle your real Christmas trees using your garden waste bin (place it beside the bin, on the day of your collection, if it is too big to go inside). In the new year, to help speed up your garden waste collections please do not place your garden waste bin out for collection unless it is at least half full.
If you have Greenbags you can recycle the following items from the kerbside or from recycling points: cardboard food and packaging boxes (please place beside your cardboard bag if it will not fit in), hard plastic packaging, plastic bottles, plastic biscuit trays and other plastic trays/food tubs.
Please put plastics in one bag and cardboard in the other as the council cannot recycle mixed bags.

OPENING TIMES
The Sands Centre closes at 6pm on Christmas Eve and is closed Christmas Day. It opens on Boxing Day from midday until 9pm. New Year’s Eve closing is at 4pm and the centre’s closed on New Year’s Day. It reopens on January 2 from 9am until 8pm.
Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery will be closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and January 1.

CAR PARKING
Car parks are open as normal over Christmas.
 

ALLERDALE COUNCIL

OFFICE CLOSURE DATES
All council offices (including Allerdale House in Workington and all customer service centres in Cockermouth, Keswick, Maryport and Wigton) and telephone lines will be closed from midday on Christmas Eve until 9am* on January 2. (*Allerdale House opens at 8.45am).

BEREAVEMENT SERVICES
Bereavement services will be open except for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

REFUSE AND RECYCLING
During week commencing December 23, refuse, paper and purple bag collections will take place as normal on December 23 and Christmas Eve. All other collections due this week will be two days later than normal.
For week commencing December 30, collections will be picked up as normal on Monday and New Year’s Eve then for the rest of the week will be one day later than normal.
Garden waste collections will not be made until the beginning of February.
All disposal sites will be open until 4pm as normal over the festive period with the exception of Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and January 5.

OPENING TIMES
Local Links, Solway Coast Discovery Centre, Silloth TIC – closes at 1pm on December 23 and reopens at 9am on January 3.
Helena Thompson Museum, Workington, closes at 4pm on December 22 and reopens at 1.30pm on January 5.
Maryport Maritime Museum is shut until January 31.
Keswick Museum is currently closed for rebuilding works.
The Wave Centre, Maryport, will close at 5pm Christmas Eve and reopen at 9am on December 27 for Wizard of Oz theatre. From December 27 until January 5, the Wave will be open from 9am-8pm with the exception of New Year’s Eve when it will close at 5pm and will be closed on New Year’s Day.
Workington Leisure Centre will be closed on December 24, 25, 26 and 31 and January 1. Reduced opening hours of 10am-4pm will be in place on 23, 27, 28, 29 and December 30. Normal opening hours resume on January 2.
Cockermouth Leisure Centre will be closed on December 24, 25, 26, 31 and January 1. Reduced opening hours of 9am-5pm on December 28, 29 and January 4 and 5. Reduced opening hours of 8am-8pm on December 23 and 30 and January 2 and 3.
Keswick Leisure Pool will be closed on December 24, 25, 26 and 31, along with January 1.
Clip n’ Climb at the Wave Centre, Maryport, will be closed on December 24, 25 and 26 and January 1.

CAR PARKS
Free car parking is available in Wigton, Keswick, Cockermouth and Workington on Christmas Eve.
 

COPELAND COUNCIL

OFFICE CLOSURE DATES
Copeland Council’s main office, the Copeland Centre in Whitehaven, will close at 1pm on December 24 and reopen at 8.45am on January 2.
The Cleator Moor Locallinks office and the Millom office will both close at 1pm on the December 24 and reopen at 9am on January 2. Outside those times the council can be contacted for emergencies relating to flooding, homelessness and dangerous structures on 0845 054 8600.
The Home Group offices in the Copeland Centre building, Whitehaven, will be open on December 24, 27, 30, 31 from 9am until 5.30pm
In addition, Home Group’s Customer Service Centre will be available for emergencies on 0345 141 4663.

REFUSE AND RECYCLING
Collections scheduled for December 23 and 24. There will be no collections on Christmas Day and Boxing Day and collections for the rest of that week will be two days later than normal.
On December 30 and 31 collections will be as normal. There will be no collections on New Year’s Day and collections for the rest of that week will be one day later than normal.
This all applies to any ‘black box’ kerbside recycling collections as well as household waste.

OPENING TIMES
Copeland Pool: December 24, 25, 26 closed; December 27 open 9am until 3.30pm; December 28 and 29 open 9am until 3pm; December 30 open 9am until 3.30pm; closed December 31 and January 1; January 2 open as normal.
Cleator Moor Bowls and Sports Centre: December 24, 25, 26 closed; December 27 to 30 open 10am until 4pm; December 31 and January 1 closed; January 2 open as normal
Whitehaven Sports Centre: December 24, 25, 26 closed; December 27 and 28 December open 9am until 6pm; December 29 and 30 open 9.30am until 6pm; December 31 and January 1 closed; January 2 normal.
The Beacon: Open on December 23 then closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. It will then open as normal.

EDEN COUNCIL

OFFICE CLOSURE DATES
Council offices at Mansion House and the Town Hall in Penrith will close at 3pm on Christmas Eve and reopen at 8.45am on January 2.
A duty officer maintains out of hours emergency cover. To contact them, call 01768 212499.

BEREAVEMENT SERVICES
Offices at Penrith Cemetery are closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. They will be open between 8.30am and 12.30pm on December 27, 30 and 31. The phone number is 01768 862152.

REFUSE AND RECYCLING
Collections due on December 23 will take place on December 21, those on December 24 on December 23, those on December 25 on December 24, those on December 26 on December 27, and those on December 27 on December 28. Collections due on January 1, 2 and 3 will be made a day later.
Real Christmas trees can be recycled – just place them into your garden waste bin. Only trees placed into the bin will be collected and recycled.
Alternatively, you can recycle your real Christmas tree at either Kirkby Stephen or Flusco Household Waste Recycling centres.
Some garden waste and bag and box collection dates have been amended.
Christmas holiday blue bags refuse collections dates are printed on residents’ blue bags.

OPENING TIMES
Penrith and Eden Museum will close at 4pm on December 24 and reopen at 10am on January 2.
Penrith Leisure Centre is closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

CUMBRIA COUNTY COUNCIL

OFFICE CLOSURE DATES
Some of its offices - including the head office in The Courts, Carlisle - are closed from December 25 until January 2.

ADULT SOCIAL CARE
Residential and home care services operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Adult Social Care offices opening hours are: December 24 – 9am to 5pm; December 27 – 9am to 4.30pm; December 30 – 9am to 5pm; December 31 – 9am to 5pm.
When offices are closed, the social care out of hours emergency service on 01228 526690 can be used 24 hours a day for adult social care emergencies.

CHILDREN’S SERVICES
The children’s services head office at Portland Square, Carlisle, will close on Christmas Eve and reopen on January 2.
Children’s social care offices: 3 Alfred Street North, Carlisle; Skirsgill, Penrith; New Oxford Street, Workington; Market Street, Barrow and Blencathra House, Whitehaven, will all be closed on bank holidays but open 9am to 4.30pm on December 27, 9am to 5pm on December 30 and 31.
During closure periods, the out-of-hours number is 0333 240 1727 which can be used 24-hours a day for children’s social care emergencies.

RECYCLING
Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) will all be open as usual throughout the festive season with the exception of Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, when they will all be closed.
They will all be closing at 4pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Otherwise they are open:

  • Frizington, Yeathouse Quarry – 8am to 4pm, seven days a week.
  • Millom, Redhills – 8am to 4pm, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
  • Penrith, Flusco – 8am to 6pm, seven days a week.
  • Kirkby Stephen, Hobsons Lane – 8am to 6pm, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday.
  • Maryport, Glasson Industrial Estate – 8am to 6pm, seven days a week.
  • Workington, Clay Flatts – 8am to 6pm, seven days a week.
  • Wigton, Syke Park 8am to 6pm, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
  • Carlisle, Bousteads Grassing – 8am to 6pm, seven days a week.
  • Brampton, Townfoot Industrial Estate – 10am to 6pm every day except Tuesday

The HWRC permit helpline 0845 055 1118 will be closed on bank holidays and weekends but open between 9am and 3.30pm on December 24, 27, 30 and 31.

CUMBRIA HIGHWAYS
The Highways Hotline will be available throughout Christmas and New Year on 0845 6096609 for reporting highways problems or via the email highways@cumbria.gov.uk. Any emergencies during out of hours (5.30pm to 8.30am) should be reported to the police.
During public holidays, calls should be limited to serious highways problems such as flooding, landslips and severe weather.
Staff will be on call throughout the holiday period to deal with highways issues such as severe weather problems.

LIBRARIES
All libraries will be closed on bank holidays.
This year the six main libraries (Carlisle, Penrith, Workington, Whitehaven, Kendal and Barrow) will be working normal hours from December 27 to 30. They will close at 1pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. All other branch libraries will be closed from Christmas Eve until January 2.
The exception to this is Wigton Library, due the Registrar being based there. They will be open for three mornings over the Christmas period, one of these being a morning when they are normally closed. The library is open because the Registrar’s office will be open. The days and hours of opening will be: December 27, 30 and 31 – 9.30am until midday.

ARCHIVES
Closed other than Cumbria Archive Centre, Carlisle, December 24 open 9.30am to 1pm; December 27 open 9.30am to 5pm; December 31 open 9.30am to 1pm.
Cumbria Archive and Local Studies Centre, Whitehaven December 24 open 9.30am to 12.30pm; December 27 and 30 open to 9.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 5pm; December 31 open 9.30am to 12.30pm.

COMMUNITY MEALS
Community Meals operate as usual except for the bank holidays when there is a restricted service.
The administrative offices will be closed on bank holidays and weekends, but open the following days:
Edward Street, Carlisle office (Carlisle and Eden districts) 01228 227693 – office open December 23, 24, 27, 30 and 31 9am to 2pm
Lillyhall office (Allerdale and Copeland) 01946 506592 – office open December 23, 24, 27, 30 and 31 9.15am to 2.15pm.

Alston Local Links: December 24 open 10am to 1pm; December 27 open 10am to 5pm; December 28 open 10am to 3pm; December 30 open 10am to 5pm; December 31 open 10am to 1pm; January 2 open 10am to 3pm; January 3 open 10am to 5pm.
Wigton Local Links: December 24, 9am until midday.
The other Local Links under county council control are Appleby, Aspatria, Cleator Moor, Longtown, Kirkby Stephen and Silloth. They will all be closed between Christmas and New Year. They will also close at 1pm on Christmas Eve.

REGISTRARS
All registrars’ offices are closed on December 25, 26 and January 1. The online booking system can used to book appointments when offices are closed www.cumbria.gov.uk/registrationservice.
Opening hours: Carlisle: open 9am to 4.30pm on December 23, 24, 27, 30 and 31 and January 2 and 3.
Wigton: open 9.30am to midday on December 24, 27, 30 and 31 and January 2 and 3.
Cockermouth: closed until February 2014 for refurbishment.
Penrith: December 23 9.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 4.30pm, December 24 and 31 9.30am to 12.30pm, December 27 and 30 9.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 4.30pm, on January 2.
Whitehaven: December 23, 24, 27, 30 and 31 9.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 4.30pm; and January 2 and 3 January 9.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 4.30pm.

TRADING STANDARDS
Citizens Advice Consumer helpline – 0845 4040506 – will be open December 24, 9am to 1pm; December 31 9am to 1pm; December 27 and 30 9am to 5pm.


HEALTH

HOSPITAL HOURS
The following NHS primary care services will be available throughout Cumbria.

Alston Hospital: 24-7 admissions, visiting times 2.30pm-4pm and 6pm-7pm.
Brampton Hospital: Visiting times more flexible (as long as not during meal times). Visiting times: 10am-midday, 1pm-5pm and 6pm-8pm.
Cockermouth Hospital: No change. Visiting times: 3pm-4.30pm and 6.30pm-7.30pm.
Keswick Hospital: No changes, visiting: 2pm-3.30pm and 6.30pm-7.30pm. Langdale North has open visiting on both Langdale wards from 9.30 am onwards, Xmas Day and Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day.
Maryport Hospital: No changes to the visiting times. MIU normal hours except for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day when they will be open 8.30am until 4pm.
Penrith Hospital: (Eden Unit) Monday – Friday (not Thursday) Eden Health and Wellbeing Hub (Age UK) Mon-Wed, 9am-5pm, Friday 9am-midday. Day Hospice on Thursday (normal). Falls group Friday (normal).
Wigton Hospital: No change, everyday 2.30pm-4pm and 6.30pm-7.30pm.
Workington Hospital: Ward is as normal; Workington Access Centre closes at 6pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve and is closed on bank holidays.
Sexual Health Carlisle & Eden: On Christmas Eve there is a drop-in clinic for all services between 8.30am and 1.30pm
They are closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day. On New Year’s Eve there is a drop-in clinic for all services between 8.30am and 1.30pm. They are closed on New Year’s Day and then open as normal. The first Saturday clinic in the new year will be on January 4.
PCAS Penrith Community Hospital: 24 hours.
PCAS Westmorland General Hospital: 24 hours.

Carlisle – Cumberland Infirmary: Children’s Ward, 9.30am-7pm (at sister’s discretion). Parents unrestricted. Special Care Baby Unit: Parents unrestricted, all others to be accompanied by a parent. Maternity: Partners 10am-9pm, all others 3pm-4pm and 7pm-8pm. Elm A, B and C, 3pm-4.30pm, and 6.30pm-8pm daily. Larch A/B 2pm-3pm and 6pm-7pm. Larch C 3pm-5pm and 7pm-8pm. Neuro-rehab unit (now on Elm) 3pm-4.30pm and 6.30pm-8pm. Willow B medical 3pm-4.30pm and 6.30pm-8pm daily (times can be negotiable with nurse in charge). Coronary care unit and emergency medical admissions unit 3pm-4.30pm and 6.30pm-8pm. Beech: 3pm-5pm and 7pm-8pm. Maple A: 3pm-5pm and 7pm-8pm. Maple B: 3pm-5pm and 7pm-8pm. Maple C & D: 3pm-5pm, 7pm-8pm other times at discretion of nurse in charge. Aspen: 3pm-5pm and 7pm-8pm.

GP SERVICES
Cumbria Health on Call provides out of hours’ specialist services for patients with urgent medical problems who need to contact a clinician after doctors’ surgeries close. To speak to someone call 0300 0247247.

NATIONAL SERVICES
NHS Direct provides 24 hour free health advice. The service can be contacted on 0845 4647 123 or online at www.nhs.uk. NHS dental practices will be closed over the Christmas and New Year bank holidays. Emergency dental treatment and advice will be available as normal.

CARLISLE: Christmas Day rota – Co-operative Pharmacy, 33B Scotland Road, 2pm-3pm. Boxing Day – Lloyds Pharmacy, Warwick Road, 11am-3pm; Asda Superstore, Parkhouse Road, 9am-6pm; Boots the Chemist, English Street, 8am-5.30pm; Sainsbury, Bridge Street, 10am-5pm.
