Carlisle Pirelli tragedy: Accidental death verdict

A jury has ruled that the death of a man who died after climbing into a factory's industrial steam oven was an accident.

They have returned their unanimous verdict after hearing four days of evidence about how George Falder died at Carlisle's Pirelli tyre factory.

The father-of-two, 48, died inside the plant’s huge oven on September 30 last year.

Sending the jury to consider its verdict after summing up this morning, assistant coroner Robert Chapman told them they could consider three verdicts - that Mr Falder killed himself, that he died accidentally or that they could not be clear how his death happened.

And if they were to rule that he killed himself, he said they must be sure of that beyond all reasonable doubt.

Mr Chapman said: “If Mr Falder had been considering killing himself in the autoclave he must have known what would happen to him in going into it - the effects of the pressure, the steam and the heat. It’s an horrific death.

“Mrs Falder said the George she knew would not put her children and his workmate Dave Arnot [the man who found him] through the trauma of it and you might consider she was the person who knew him best.”
