Carlisle man finds live moth in his bag of spinach

A father got more than he bargained for – when he found a live moth in his spinach.

Stuart Curtis, of Eilbeck Close, on the Raffles estate, Carlisle, could not believe his eyes when he was unpacking his shopping and saw the winged creature fluttering around inside the sealed bag.

“I went into Sainsbury’s on Tuesday to stock up after the bank holiday,” the 38-year-old father-of-three told the News & Star.

“We were unpacking it and my partner spotted a live moth in the spinach. I took it straight back to customer services, who gave me a refund – and stamped my receipt with ‘insect’.”

Stuart said he understands that these things can happen, but is astounded that nobody noticed the one-inch moth flying about in the bag.

He added: “What annoys me most, is that customer services told me somebody would call me and I have not yet heard from them – it’s like they don’t take me seriously.

“Maybe I’m clutching at straws, but it seems they don’t see how potentially dangerous it could be.”

Stuart said he was particularly concerned that any bugs the moth may have had could have spread into the spinach and been ingested by his three-year-old daughter or twin one-year-old boys.

“Maybe this happens 20 times a day,” he added, “but I’ve never experienced it before.

“I might not have acted quite so Victor Meldrew about it if someone had had the decency to call me back.”

A spokeswoman for Sainsbury’s said: “Incidents like this are extremely rare as we have the highest standards.

“We are investigating this and would like to apologise to Mr Curtis for the inconvenience caused.”

Have your say

Mags, you say that you are pretty shocked that Sainsburys did not contact this man. In your post you state that BHS contacted you "a few weeks later". This man only waited 3/4 days before running to the press. Do you think this a reasonable passage of time?

I am pretty shocked that Sainsburys did not call you back or at least write to you. Many years ago i was in BHS cafe, had a cheescake and coffee, in my last bite i found a small piece of plastic in the cheesecake, i wasnt gonna complain as id previously worked at cavvies for over 12 years so was well aware of how easy foreign bodies can get into products from time to time, but mentioned it to the woman on the till, she immediately was full of apologies, gave me a full refund, asked me for my address, afew weeks later i received a letter from BHS and a £10 gift voucher!, i wasn't even bothered about the plastic, id enjoyed the cheesecake!, so with sainsburys not writing to you, thats pretty bad customer service in my opinion. As for moths in spinach, not suprising, im just amazed that it was still alive. we had a period many years ago where they kept finding dead moths in spinach, they had to change supplier quickly.. just amazed that this one was still alive.
