More than 100 students from the Richard Rose Central Academy dance company, DanceCo, were joined by 60 year five pupils from Norman Street Primary School for their annual flashmob yesterday afternoon – and it wasn’t long before they drew in a crowd.

The dancers gathered in English Street to perform their routine to a medley of old and new feel-good songs. Pharrell Williams and Daft Punk’s Happy and Get Lucky, mixed with Nile Rogers hits Good Times and We are Family managed to get everyone’s feet tapping.

Eleven-year-old Adam Megson, whose ambition is to work in performing arts, impressed the crowds when he performed his own street dance routine.

“It was brilliant,” he told the News & Star. “I loved it. It can be nerve-wracking to begin with, but you warm up as you get into the routine.”

It is the fifth year that students from the academy have surprised shoppers with the spectacle, and the second year they have involved Norman Street Primary School.

Wendy Boothman, lead practitioner for dance at the academy, has being preparing them since Easter.

“It gives the younger pupils a taster and is a fabulous introduction to the academy,” she said. “It was absolutely perfect – and much harder than last year.”

Nick Page, headteacher of Norman Street Primary School, added: “It was fantastic. It’s great for the school to be involved. They set a good example to our students.

“It’s great for coordination, their self-esteem and it makes them smile.”

No. It'll bring too many restrictions. It won't help anything

I'm still to be convinced. Need to know more about the benefits
