Hopes Cumbrian firms will win orders after Far East trade mission

ORGANISERS of a nuclear-industry trade mission to Japan and South Korea are “cautiously optimistic” that orders will follow.

Growing market: Delegation members at the Korea Atomic Industry Forum

Britain’s Energy Coast organised the visit by 12 west Cumbrian businesses last week as part of part of a wider British trade mission to promote products, services and know how.

Tata Steel, Nuclear Engineering Services, NIS, James Fisher Nuclear, Nuclear Decontamination Services, Westlakes Engineering, Forth Engineering, TIS Cumbria, React Engineering, National Nuclear Laboratory, Shepley Engineers and Resource Marketing all took up the offer of places.

Brian Wilson, chairman of Britain’s Energy Coast, said: “Just being here in such numbers has made an extremely strong statement. There is no doubt the skills, products and services developed in west Cumbria can be applied in other markets. There is undoubtedly cautious optimism that a lot can come out of this.”

In Korea the mission met 37 companies including Korea Electric Power Corporation, Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power, Samsung C&T Corporation and Hyundai Heavy Industries.

In Japan, the Cumbrian companies met more than 40 businesses including major players such as Tokyo Electric Power Company, Hitachi, Toshiba and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

South Korea wants to increasing the proportion energy generated from nuclear from 32 to 59 per cent by 2030.

The Japanese are grappling with the clean-up following the Fukushima disaster.

George Andrews, programme director at Nuclear Engineering Services, agreed the mission had been a success. He said: “It provided a superb opportunity.”
