Two Cumbrian companies have appeared in a league table for firms with fast-growing profits.

Carlisle-based housebuilder Story Homes and Westmorland Family – owners of Tebay Services and the Rheged Centre, near Penrith – both featured in the 18th annual Sunday Times BDO Profit Track 100 league table.

This ranks Britain’s private companies with the fastest-growing profits over three years.

Story Homes, which has its headquarters in Kingstown, feature on the league table for a record sixth time. This comes after it strengthened its land bank during the recession and expanded into Scotland and across the north of England. It grew profits by an average of 81 per cent a year to £22m in 2015/2016, when it completed 565 properties. This put it at 44 on the list, up from 62 last year.

Steve Errington , the company’s chief executive, said: “It is a fantastic achievement for Story Homes to be listed in the Profit Track 100 again this year.

“We place a great deal of importance on ensuring that we recruit the right people into our business, as it is our passionate and committed team which helps us to achieve our ambitious growth plans in line with our company values.”

Westmorland has its headquarters in Orton, south of Shap and is a new entry at 95 in the list. This ranking comes after it made a profit of £7m for the 2015/16 financial year.

Chief executive Sarah Dunning said: “We were the first, and remain the only family-run motorway services on the UK roads. There are no franchises or fast food on our forecourts.

“Proper food with locality and a sense of belonging is at the very heart of everything we do. We believe proper food matters. So we serve it where you’d least expect it – on the motorway.”

Bed manufacturer the Silentnight Group, which has its headquarters in Lancashire and owns the Sealy factory in Aspatria, also featured in the list, coming in at 47.

The league table is sponsored by accountancy firm BDO and merchant bank UBS Wealth Management, and is compiled by Fast Track, the Oxford-based research and networking events firm.
