An 11-year-old boy has been flown to hospital in Newcastle after a crash this morning.

The youngster was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary by air ambulance following the collision in Egremont at about 8.10am today.

He was this afternoon said to be in a serious but stable condition.

The boy, a pedestrian, was struck by a red Citroen DS3 car.

Its 25-year-old female driver was shaken but unhurt.

Police described it as a serious incident.

The crash happened between A595 North Road and St Bridgets Lane. Main Street was closed for about two-and-a-half hours.

Motorists were asked to avoid the area and use alternative routes.
