Council officials were forced to tell residents to flee their homes due to a methane gas leak.

Allerdale Council’s environmental health department told residents in five houses in Pilgrim Street to evacuate their properties due to localised levels of naturally forming methane gas.

Residents affected have been contacted directly by the council, who are continuing to monitor the area.

Risk will be managed by ventilating the buildings involved, to bring the methane concentration levels down.

Allerdale Council has apologised for any inconvenience to those affected and has pledged to offer them full support.

The council says no other properties are affected, but that it will continue to monitor the methane levels in the area as a precaution.
