A woman is fighting for her life after a serious crash on a key Cumbrian route.
Police were called to the two vehicle collision on the A6, at the Plumpton Foot junction, at about 12.35pm today.
The crash involved a grey Volkswagen golf and a white van.
The driver of the Golf was a 39-year-old woman from Carlisle, who suffered minor injuries.
The front seat passenger of the Golf, a woman in her seventies, was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the van, a 29-year-old man from Gateshead, was uninjured.
The road remains closed in both directions and the main diversion route is via the M6.
Any witnesses are asked to call PC 2219 Young, of the Mobile Support Group at Carlisle, on 101.
