A Subway sandwich shop which had been planned for Whitehaven will no longer open.

Copeland Council has received a planning application for the construction of a new Spar and petrol station at Hensingham and the conversion of the current Spar into two retail units.

An earlier approved scheme had included a Subway store, but this has now been omitted.

Documents submitted to Copeland Council state that the new application would see a two-phase development on the former G&M Supplies site on the corner of Main Street and Richmond Hill Road.

It would "allow the new store to be occupied prior to redevelopment of the existing Spar store to allow a smooth transition".

There would be a 23 space car park and four fuel islands on the forecourt.

The plans have been resubmitted by James Hall Co Ltd of Preston, the north of England regional wholesaler for Spar.

Copeland Council is expected to make a decision on the amended plans in the coming weeks.
