CUMBRIA'S cold snap will continue overnight and into tomorrow morning.

The Met Office has a severe weather warning of ice in force until 11am tomorrow.

Temperatures will dip below freezing overnight, thought it could feel as cold as -6C in parts of Cumbria.

Drivers are urged to take extra care, following a number of accidents earlier today.

"Once again, ice will be a hazard in places through this period. This will happen as heavy showers of rain, hail, sleet and snow alternate with clearer periods, allowing temperatures to dip sharply," the warning states.

"Ice will be the most widespread hazard, especially overnight and particularly on untreated surfaces, or where heavy showers wash grit or salt off roads."

A number of the county's higher roads have been closed due to treacherous condition, while others remain open but hazardous.

  • A686 Hartside Pass. Hazardous driving conditions due to snow between Alston and Melmerby.
  • Ennerdale Bridge - Cold Fell Road. Cold Fell Road closed due to ice between Ennerdale Bridge and Calder Bridge
  • Buttermere - Newlands Pass. Newlands Pass closed due to ice between Buttermere and Braithwaite.
  • Eskdale - Hardknott Pass. Hardknott Pass closed due to ice between Eskdale and Little Langdale.
