Vandals wreaked havoc through a Cumbrian school, trashing play equipment and toys.

The "senseless" damage has left Maryport Infant School, which is already under financial strain, facing a bill totalling hundreds of pounds.

Shed doors were kicked in and damaged and play equipment and toys - ranging from foam bricks to ride on plastic vehicles - were strewn around the playground.

Maryport Infant School will now have to fundraise to replace the equipment.

Rebeccah (crct) Morrison, lead early years teacher at the Camp Road school, said staff were disgusted and horrified by the damage done - seemingly for no reason.

"Nothing was stolen - just vandalised," she explained.

"Schools have no money to spare these days. The smaller shed will cost at least £300 to replace.

"The larger one will cost about £1,000 I think, if it can't be repaired."

Mrs Morrison said the pupils had been upset by the damage and mess created.

"We talk a lot about choices in the school. We told the children that the damage had been done by people who had made bad choices."

The doors of the two storage sheds had obviously been kicked in, she said.

"This is not the first time we have had vandalism here. In the past we have had the police come and talk to the children about this kind of incident," she said.

The school has asked for anyone with information about the damage, which is thought to have occurred at some point over the last bank holiday, to get in touch with the police by calling 101.
