Dedicated fundraisers are continuing their New Year's resolution to do something active every day.

Scores who have signed up for R.E.D January - which stands for Run Every Day in January - turned out for this morning's parkrun in Carlisle donning their distinctive red tech t-shirts.

They joined a record turnout of runners and walkers to complete the 5k course around Chance's Park in Morton at 9am. A total of 287 took part.

Caroline Robinson, community engagement officer for Carlisle Eden Mind, confirmed she has a record number of fundraisers signed up for this year's initiative to support the mental health charity.

She said: "We've got 105 fundraisers signed up and so many more people supporting them too.

"It is a record number and it is exciting to see so many people out for RED.

"We know it is proving so popular this year, it has taken off, compared with previous years."

She added: "This is one of three RED January takeovers of Carlisle parkrun this month - one was on New Year's Day and there's another on the 27th - but people can participate in any activity, from running to yoga.

"It promotes mental wellbeing. As you exercise, endorphins get released - those happy hormones that make you feel good.

"Exercise also helps you think clearer and gives you that space - some time out of your life to clear your mind."

Penrith parkrun next Saturday will host its own RED January takeover in aid of the charity.

RED January will end with an event at the old fire station, in Rickergate, Carlisle, on January 31.

The 6pm-8pm event is open to everyone, not just Carlisle Eden Mind "REDers" who will be able to collect their hard earned medals from Caroline.

Local fitness groups, classes, clubs and more will also be attending to help people find the perfect way to boost their wellbeing through activity.

Last year's RED January raised around £17,000 locally for Carlisle Eden Mind.

A spokesperson for Carlisle parkrun said: "It was an absolutely amazing morning in Chance's Park - a new course record with 287 parkrunners.

"287 people joined us to participate in our parkrun with lots of first timers and tourists from Manchester, Southport, Brixton and New York.

"A huge thank you has to go to all the volunteers who helped man the event."

Carlisle parkrun celebrates its fifth anniversary next Saturday - January 20.
