A major player in Cumbria's economy has picked up a prestigious award.

Dairy co-operative First Milk, which has more than 250 Cumbrian dairy farmers on its books, won the Supplier of the Year award from their largest fresh milk customer, Nestle UK and Ireland.

It comes on the back of the signing of a long-term contract for First Milk to supply the confectionery and beverage giant Nestle at its two sites at Dalston and Girvan.

This cements a deal between First Milk and Dalston, first forged in 2003.

Picking up the award from Dame Fiona Kendrick, outgoing First Milk chief executive Mike Gallacher said it recognised the strength of the partnership between Nestle and First Milk, which owns the Lake District Creamery at Aspatria.

"Nestlé have provided huge support to both the business and our British dairy farmers over the most challenging two years many can remember," said Mr Gallacher.

Robin Sundaram, responsible sourcing lead - milk buyer, Nestlé UK & Ireland, said: "These awards reflect the outstanding levels of service and quality we receive from First Milk as well as First Milk’s willingness to work with us on long-term initiatives to drive environmental and social sustainability."

A dedicated group of First Milk Cumbrian farmers supplies Dalston while others are contracted to the Aspatria creamery.
