Alcohol and CCTV equipment were stolen from Whitehaven Rugby League club during break-ins over the week-end.

Thieves forced entry to the club’s sponsor’s lounge, bar and office in separate incidents on Saturday and Sunday night.

Alongside bottles of spirits and CCTV, money was taken from the pool tables and police radios from the bar.

The club will now have to cover the costs of the damage to its property, says Whitehaven’s general manager Amanda Hewer.

She said: “The sponsor’s lounge and the bar were broken into on Saturday night and the office was broken into on Sunday night.

“We noticed that the door had been forced in the sponsor’s lounge but nothing had been taken. They’ve stolen alcohol from the bar, mainly bottles of spirits.

“Not that much has been taken, there’s just a lot of damage. They stole police radios, money from the pool tables and they have taken some CCTV equipment.”

She added: “We just found out this morning (Monday) when we walked into the office and everything was scattered everywhere. It’s not so much about what they take, it’s the money for new doors and tidying up.”

Whitehaven played on home turf on Saturday, losing 22-44 to Featherstone Rovers at the Recreation Ground.

On its Facebook page, the club posted: “We are doing all we can to make this club a successful business and ridiculous behaviour like this just keeps knocking us back to where we started.”

The club has informed the police and urged anyone with any information to come forward.
