A royal visit with a twist marked the official opening of a Workington residential care home's new wing.

Residents welcomed the Queen into their home at Fairways Residential Home to cut the ribbon - but it wasn't Elizabeth II who made an appearance.

Instead, it was drag queen Billie Raymond who greeted the residents, their families and friends.

"We wanted something fun for the residents for the official opening of the new wing and the Queen seemed appropriate," said Paula Carruthers, from P&C Residential Services Ltd.

"Our residents loved meeting her and it was a great way to mark the opening of our new facilities."

Mrs Carruthers and her sister-in-law Cathy Keough, who run the Branthwaite Road home and Westwinds, at Harrington, expect the expansion to create at least 40 jobs. New staff will be needed to work in the home's care, catering and domestic services teams.

The new wing, which opened last month, includes an additional 28 rooms as well as a hairdressing salon, function room, bar and sunroom.

Special guest Billie has over 30 years experience in the drag business, regularly performing as the Queen. She talked to residents, including 100-year-old Eva Fisher, and cut a ribbon to declare the extension open.

The residential services company took over The Fairways, which caters for people over 65 years, three years ago, and, through a phased development, have now opened it to its full capacity of 54 beds. They have also appointed a new two rosette chef, Graham Evans.

Last year, the home was rated "good" in its first inspection since opening. It was inspected by the Care Quality Commission, in May 2016, and was found to be safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.
