A teenager is battling a rare form of cancer after discovering a small lump on her foot.

Leah Stephenson, 15, has Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma, which requires savage chemotherapy, medication and blood transfusions.

She was diagnosed with cancer in June after a tiny lump formed in her foot earlier this year.

She has now lost the ability to walk and is confined to a wheelchair - ahead of her 16th birthday next week.

Leah's mum, Wendy Stephenson, said her daughter is currently receiving treatment at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary.

She said: "Leah's not doing too bad. She developed pains in her legs and can't walk and is confined to a wheelchair but she's doing amazing.

"She has to rely on other people to do things that she could once do for herself.

"She just wants to go home and do things that a normal teenager would do."

Leah, of Prospect, near Aspatria, is a member of Ewanrigg Community Choir. She recently left Beacon Hill Community School after sitting some of her GCSEs.

The choir is organising a fundraising concert at the Richard Rose Morton Academy Theatre in Carlisle on September 1.

Maddy Prior and Rick Kemp from Steeleye Span will perform at the concert along with Spud Sinclair, Steve Bailey, Two of a Kind and Aimee.

Ian Kellett, musical director of Ewanrigg Community Choir, said: "Leah has been singing with us for about 18 months and she is a devoted member. She's a lovely little thing and we just want to do something to help.

"We love Leah too and want to give her the opportunity to experience something amazing.

"Like a trip to Disney, a cruise or an African Safari. She isn't mobile right now so we want to let her decide what she would like to do.

"We just want to give her some optimism through this awful chemotherapy."

Leah's sister Ella, 25, said on her gofundme page: "Leah is my little sister who after an agonising five months and three surgeries is no longer able to walk.

"She has been diagnosed with a rare and very aggressive form of cancer unfortunately this has metastasized into her lungs, abdomen, spine, bone marrow and lymph nodes.

"I'm hoping to be able to get her something that will put a big smile on her face because she deserves it.

"She is my best friend and the most amazing person in the world."

Wendy said: "Leah is still going to the choir. She loves it. We get a disabled taxi up there on a Monday night.

"She would love to walk with wolves and visit London as she's never been. It would be nice for her to see Buckingham Palace and visit the museums and go to a show.

"She has started her own Facebook page called Leah's Big Adventure.

"She's got two big brothers who are here from Australia at the moment which is nice."

On Friday night a sponsored head shave, to raise cash for Leah, took place at the Miners Arms pub in Prospect and on Saturday regulars set off on a sponsored walk up to Arkleby, across to Gilcrux and back to the pub for a barbecue.

Tickets for the concert, on September 1, are priced at £10. It starts at 7pm and there will be a wine bar and raffle.

Tickets are available from choir members or by calling 07795 077176 or 07590 575181.
