Westlife star Shane Filan will join Lionel Richie on stage in Carlisle this summer.

The Irish star has been announced as a special guest of the American legend for his Brunton Park gig.

It's yet another boost for what's already lining up to be an exciting summer of live music.

And hopes are high that Richie will pack-out the home of Carlisle United on Sunday, June 17.

Filan has previously performed on stage with Richie in his Westlife days.

A spokesman for the All The Hits Tour, which is bringing the superstar to the city, said: "These will be Lionel’s first UK shows since receiving glittering reviews for a tour which included three nights at London’s The O2.

"The dates followed a phenomenal Glastonbury performance which drew the biggest crowd of the weekend as more than 200,000 people flocked to the Pyramid Stage.

"Lionel’s incredible success continued as his album The Definitive Collection topped the charts and provided his first UK number one in 23 years."

Filan, who performed at the Sands Centre last year, was part of Westlife for 14 years, amassing no fewer than 14 UK number one hits, 11 top five albums and in excess of 50 million record sales worldwide.

This summer is the third that a big-name music act has taken to the pitch at Brunton Park, following Sir Rod Stewart in 2016 and Olly Murs last summer.

Elsewhere in the city, Paloma Faith will headline a day of racing and live music at Carlisle Racecourse on July 7.

Former Spice Girl Melanie C, meanwhile, will be at the same venue - headlining Ladies Night - on August 6.
