Sellafield workers are preparing to go on strike on Wednesday in a continued row over pay.

The Unite union, which represents more than 1,100 workers at the site, will be taking strike action from 6.45am on Wednesday until 6am the next morning.

Workers are disputing a 1.5 per cent pay offer – which they say is “completely unacceptable” and has been imposed by Sellafield Ltd in September – backdated to April 1 this year.

They took strike action earlier this month, and are preparing for their second stint this week.

Graham Williams, Unite regional officer, said: "People's feelings have been strengthened by the company's lack of action. We have had a strike two weeks ago. We haven't had any meetings with the company since."

Mr Williams said Unite workers are in dispute over two aspects of the pay.

"First of all, the imposition which we can't have and also that we don't think the pay offer is reflective of the roles that our members undertake," he said.

Unite said it would continue to maintain a skeleton staff during the forthcoming strike to reassure the people of Cumbria on health and safety issues.

Mr Williams said that during the strike action on November 7, it was well organised by security and Cumbria Police.

A Sellafield Ltd spokesman said: “The safety and security of the Sellafield site are our priorities during any industrial action. As always, we will work with other agencies to try to minimise disruption for the public.”
