Two historical characters and their horse Blue have been making good use of the new pedestrian crossing linking two of Carlisle's most historic sites.

Shoppers and visitors have been stopped in their tracks to watch the Roman soldiers and their four-legged companion walking around the city centre.

Blue was also given a chance to gallop on the grass outside Carlisle Castle, this morning after using the new crossing linking it with the city's historic quarter.

They are taking part in the Roman Takeover weekend at Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery.

The two days of family fun sees the museum hosting a range of special activities as part of the city's continuing involvement in Hadrian's Cavalry.

Since April 2017, Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site has played host to a major exhibition celebrating the prestigious Roman cavalry regiments that once guarded the north west frontier of the Roman Empire.

Carlisle is one of the 10 sites along the length of the wall hosting events from April through to September 10, including the Roman Takeover.

The Roman Takeover weekend running today and tomorrow also includes chariot racing, Roman cooking demonstrations and warrior training.
