Rock 'n' roll fans kicked off a weekend of fun at Keswick's Midsummer Festival.

The three day event, organised by the town council, started with a rock night yesterday in the market square featuring a range of local bands.

Headliners Queen II were a hit with the crowds, who also enjoyed performances from Hard Bop, Waters Edge, and the 102s.

And there's plenty in store today and tomorrow for people of all ages as the fun continues.

Fitz Park hosts "Prom in the Park" for concert-goers to pitch up for a picnic as they enjoy a string of classical performances.

The evening will include classics from Puccini, Mozart, Strauss and Verdi along with many other pieces.

The event kicks off at 3pm with Cockermouth Mechanics Band who will play renditions of popular classics.

And the day ends with a finale in the style of Last Night of the Proms at about 9.30pm.

The free weekend of entertainment continues tomorrow with the much-loved Scruffs Dog Show in the park.

There are more than 20 categories in all, including a best trick, most extraordinary dog, shiniest coat, best, scruffiest dog, best mismatched pair and a dogtathlon for the ultra fit pooches.

Tony Lywood, who is on the town council events committee which is behind the festival, hopes it will be the best yet and promised there's plenty still to come.

"We've concertinaed the whole thing into one weekend which should make it a very enjoyable event for visitors and locals alike," he said.

"Town councils are not all about trades and parks and although we can't bring in people like Coldplay, it's going to be fabulous.

"It gets better every year."

All events are free to watch.
