A key Carlisle road junction is closed from today for three weeks.

The junction from Eastern Way onto the A69 at Warwick Road will be shut as Northern Gas Networks (NGN) carries out work.

A lane on Eastern Way will also be closed and diversions will be in place.

NGN are diverting a gas main which is needed to allow future widening of the road.

Cumbria County Council is in the process of upgrading parts of Warwick Road in a project known as the Junction Improvement Scheme. It advises motorists to plan ahead.

Traffic will continue to be able to turn off Warwick Road on to Eastern Way heading south, but there will be no access from Eastern Way on to Warwick Road by any vehicle.

HGVs will be diverted via the M6 but cars and buses heading north on Eastern Way will still be able to access Warwick Road via Durranhill Road. Signage is being put in place to advise motorists of the closures and diversions.

Meanwhile a £5m investment in the A66 that will see different parts of the route closed over a total of seven weekends has begun.

Highways England is reconstructing and resurfacing a single carriageway section of the road between Low Moor and Kirkby Thore as well as resurfacing six other sections between Penrith and Long Marton.

The first closures ended this morning and involved resurfacing part of the Kemplay roundabout.

Others will be at the M6 junction 40, Temple Sowerby bypass, Sandford-Walkmill, Kirkby Thore-Long Marton, and Broughton-Kemplay roundabout in the coming weeks.

HGVs are being diverted along the A69 or M62. Other, local diversions are in place for smaller vehicles.
