The richest man in Cumbria Philip Day has seen his fortune grow by £50m in the last year - ranking him among the wealthiest people in the north west of England.

Mr Day, who owns Edinburgh Woollen Mill, has once again appeared on the Sunday Times' Rich List which records his wealth as £1.2bn. The fortune places him seventh on north west's breakdown, six places above Sir Paul McCartney and his wife Nancy Shevell.

The billionaire has an estate near Brampton and has financial links to Carlisle United.

Mr Day is one of a record 11 billionaires from the region who feature in the list, which is topped by The Duke of Westminster and his family, who are worth an eye-watering £9.9642bn, up a whopping £444m compared to the previous. The Duke is also the UK's youngest billionaire.

The combined wealth of the richest 20 in the north west stands at £32.175bn this year. Only one of the top 20 has seen their wealth fall in the past year, while between them they are worth £2.724bn more than they were in 2017.

Robert Watts, the compiler of The Sunday Times Rich List, said: “Our Northwest Rich List is again led by the Duke of Westminster, but wealth creation in the UK is increasingly a story of self-made - rather than inherited - wealth.

“Fred and Peter Done, the Issa Brothers and Henry Moser all started out with little, worked ferociously hard and now sit on ten-figure fortunes. That’s the big difference we’ve seen over the 30 editions of The Sunday Times Rich List - wealth creation is now a story of self-made men and women."
