The kitchen appliances most likely to start a fire in households across Cumbria have been revealed.

New figures released by the Home Office show cookers, microwaves and toasters were responsible for the highest number of call outs to the county's fire service during 2017/18.

In total, firefighters attended 127 house fires started by a domestic appliance between April 2017 and March this year.

Of these, 75 were started by cookers, including ovens.

A further ten were caused by microwaves while nine were started by grills and toasters. Deep fat fryers sparked another six blazes.

The Fire Brigades Union warned that both manufacturers and householders have a duty to prevent fires caused by everyday appliances.

A spokesman for the union said: "Manufacturers have a duty to ensure the products they sell are safe for the public to use and do not pose a threat to life.

"Make sure that the electrical wiring in your homes is in good order, and ensure that you have working smoke alarms and have a plan for what to do if they go off."

The spokesman added: "We can all play our part in reducing fire risk by registering products with the manufacturers when we buy them, so that we are notified if there is a safety-related recall."
