Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team and a Coastguard rescue helicopter were called out after a walker suffered a badly broken leg in the Ennerdale valley.
The 63-year-old woman, from Staffordshire, was injured while climbing the Loft Beck footpath at the head of the valley.
She was treated by a mountain rescue team doctor before being airlifted to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.
