A young man under the influence of drink or drugs has been prosecuted for assault after he approached two police officers holding an ironing board.

The officers were responding to a report that two men were seen fighting in the street at Cavaghan Gardens, off London Road, Carlisle, but they arrived at a house nearby to find 19-year-old Josh Finley on the stairs, clutching the ironing board.

At the city’s Rickergate courts complex, Finley, of Furze Street, also off London Road, admitted two common assaults – one on each of the police officers who confronted him on September 17.

The court heard that the officers had to tell him five times to put down the ironing board, which he eventually did.

“He appeared to be under the influence of drink or drugs,” said prosecutor Pam Ward.

When he was interviewed, he had no recollection of the confrontation. He said he had had a lot to drink and had been staying with his best friend.

John Smith, for the defendant, said there had been no contact between the defendant and the officers and Finley had not even brandished the ironing board.

He added that Finley, who lived with his grandfather, took medication for depression.

He was fined £220, with £85 costs and a £35 victim surcharge.
