Police have confirmed that the cyclist involved in a collision with a lorry at the Stainton/Cargo roundabout on the A689 Carlisle bypass, has died.

The tragedy was confirmed by police just moments ago - but as all of their next of kin have not yet been informed - an ID is yet to be released.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 10.06am.

Traffic in the centre of Carlisle is likely to be busier than normal, due to the earlier closure of the bypass.

Police have marked the following areas as hot spots for traffic:

  • A595 Wigton Road - Delays and queuing traffic due to the problems on the A689. Problems between A595 Wigton Road and B5307 Caldcotes (Caldewgate Roundabout) and Orton Road
  • A7 Bridgewater Road - Stop-start traffic due to the problems on the A689. Problems on the A7 Bridgewater Road both ways between A595 Castle Way / Newmarket Road / Duke's Road (Hardwicke Circus) and M6 J44 / A689 (Carlisle North)
  • B5307 Newtown Road - Queuing traffic due to the problems on the A689. Problems on B5307 Newtown Road Eastbound, between Burgh Road and A595 Wigton Road (Caldewgate Roundabout).

Motorists travelling around the Dalston Road and Hardwicke Circus areas of Carlisle also face long delays.

A spokesperson for Cumbria Police said:

"Officers were called to the incident, at the Rockcliffe roundabout, at 10:06am.

"The incident involves a pedal cyclist and a vehicle.

"An ambulance is on the scene and the roundabout has been closed."

The A689 has now been fully cleared and re-opened, with traffic expected to ease.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to contact PC 2367 Baker on 101.
