Up to 30 new jobs could be created as a bid is tabled to open Cumbria's largest Subway.

The former HSBC bank at Kingstown, Carlisle, could become the city's fourth outlet of the specialist sandwich chain.

The bank closed in May.

Proposals to extend and transform the building come from ambitious brothers Simon and Mark Ledwick, who run SML Holdings.

The store would have eight full-time employees and about 20 part-time members of staff.

If plans are approved, it would become the Ledwick brothers' 18th store and their biggest one yet.

Floor plans submitted to Carlisle City Council show that it would have seating for around 70 people.

Other documents state opening hours would be 5am until midnight seven-days-a-week.

The franchisees already own Carlisle's three existing standalone Subway stores at Shaddongate, Greenmarket and their newest venture on London Road.

They also own a host of other outlets across Cumbria and Lancashire including ones in Workington, Whitehaven and Barrow.

Mark said: "Once up and running, the store will have eight full time and 20 part-time members of staff, and we are currently recruiting for a manager's position.

"This is a very exciting store opening for us as this new store will be our largest site yet and we expect it to trade well."

The ambitious pair also hope to secure permission to give the building a new look.

Mark added: "We’re looking to extend the existing building but plan to retain the original character as it dates back to the 1800s."

Subway, a specialist sandwich provider, has over 2,500 stores across UK and Ireland. They are all owned by franchisees.

It was announced in July that the chain plans to open another 500 stores by 2020, which could create 5,000 new jobs.

In 2008 it overtook McDonald's to have the most outlets across the UK and Ireland.

Subway, which was founded in the US just over 50 years ago, now has 44,000 stores in 112 countries.
