National chain Costa Coffee is set to have its second café in Workington.

It is set to move into part of the former Brantano shoe shop in Dunmail Park, Maryport Road, if planners give the green light to a store conversion.

Franchisee Red and Racz have submitted a planning application to Allerdale Borough Council seeking permission to go ahead with the plans.

In its application the firm said only part of the site will become a coffee shop and the rest will remain suitable for housing shoe retailers.

It added: "None of the seating or barriers within the mall will be fixed. The coffee shop will serve hot and cold drinks as well as hot food which is pre-prepared, food and drinks will be sold for consumption on the premises and takeaway."

Costa has one other shop in Workington, in Washington Square, which has been in the town since 2005.

It first came to Cumbria in 1998, when it opened an outlet in Scotch Street, Carlisle city centre. It has since grown to have three shops in the city, with a fourth in development, as well as others Ambleside, Barrow, Kendal, Keswick, Penrith, Ulverston, Whitehaven, Windermere and Workington.

The company has not commented on plans for the new store.
