A man has admitted stealing more than £21,000 from his brother-in-law.

Dennis Arthur Simpson, 64, appeared at Carlisle Crown Court.

He had previously pleaded denied stealing £21,060 from Cameron McCabe, prompting the case to be listed for trial.

But, during a hearing before Recorder Julie Clemitson, Simpson changed his plea and admitted a crime which he committed between March and September last year.

Recorder Clemitson adjourned the case, asking for a pre-sentence report and background medical information on the defendant to be prepared.

Prosecutor Beccy McGregor said attempts would be made to obtain an impact statement from the victim.

Ms McGregor added: "We need to check on the situation to see whether or not he will get his money back."

Simpson, of Dacre Road, Brampton, is due to receive his punishment for the theft at the crown court in January 8.

In the meantime he was granted unconditional bail by Recorder Clemitson.
