A jury has retired to consider its verdict in the trial of a man accused of raping a woman several times in Carlisle.

John Thomas Jones, 30, denies three rape allegations and has also pleaded not guilty to assaulting the alleged victim, causing her bodily harm.

Jones is on trial at Carlisle Crown Court. He is accused of carrying out the alleged sex crimes in November, 2015.

The court has heard the woman told police she was "grabbed" and "bitten" prior to the alleged rapes.

She is also said to have been beaten "black and blue".

However, Jones, of Cornwall Street, Birmingham, has denied being responsible for any violence or rapes.

When asked by his barrister whether he raped the woman three times as alleged, Jones replied: "No, sir."

After hearing all the evidence in the case, along with closing speeches and a judge's summing up, the jury retired to consider its verdicts early this afternoon.
