JUNIOR doctors across Cumbria are preparing to strike again tomorrow.

It is the third planned walkout arranged by the British Medical Association (BMA) following a long-running dispute over new contracts.

The first one-day strike took place on January 12, while a second 48-hour walkout planned for January 26 was called off as talks with the Department of Health reopened.

However, with the situation still unresolved the third planned bout of industrial action is expected to go ahead.

The 24-hour strike is expected to affect Carlisle’s Cumberland Infirmary, Whitehaven’s West Cumberland Hospital and some community health services.

The previous walkout saw about 100 junior doctors from across Cumbria take part, resulting in some appointments being cancelled.

Dr Johann Malawana, chairman of the BMA’s junior doctor committee, said: “The Government’s entrenched position in refusing to recognise Saturday working as unsocial hours, together with its continued threat to impose a contract so fiercely resisted by junior doctors across England, leaves us with no alternative

“We have talked in good faith with the Government over the past few months, but have seen no willingness on their part to move on a core issue for junior doctors.”
