Gusts of more than 50mph have been battering the Cumbrian coast as Storm Dylan hits.

Hundreds of homes in the county are without power and the Met Office has warned of "danger to life" due to flying debris.

People are also warned to take care in coastal areas, where large waves are also a threat.

Travel disruption and damage to properties is also possible.

A power cut is currently affecting more than 300 homes in the Askham-in-Furness area of south Cumbria.

Electricity North West say they are aware of the fault, affecting 321 homes, and engineers are heading to the scene.

There are also 28 properties without power in the Brampton area, with no estimated restoration time.

Eight properties are also affected by a power cut in the Penrith area. It is not expected to be restored until 11pm tonight.

A yellow wind warning of strong winds, issued by the Met Office, covers the whole of Cumbria. It runs until 3pm today.

A higher level amber warning has also been issued for south west Scotland, until 1pm.

The Met Office said: "There is a chance of damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, with the potential for injuries and danger to life from flying debris.

"Large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal areas could also be a hazard.

"Longer journey times or cancellations are possible as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected with the chance that some roads and bridges could close.

"Powers cuts may occur and other services such as mobile phone coverage may be affected."
