The cast and crew of hit television drama The A Word have been back to Cumbria to film their final Lake District scenes for the forthcoming second series.

Filming on location should have finished a fortnight ago, but bad weather halted their efforts.

Yesterday about 70 actors and crew were back at Keswick to film scenes that will feature in the six-part series due back on BBC One this autumn.

The A Word will once again follow the lives of the Hughes and Scott families, picking up two years on from the first series which won critical acclaim.

It follows Joe, whose autism is now recognised, his parents, Paul and Alison, and his wider family. It explores how Joe is changing and how he is more aware that he is different.

Christopher Eccleston is back as Joe’s grandfather, Maurice, and said he is happy to be back in the county having been a regular visitor both growing up as a child and as an actor.

“I used to come here as a child with my mum and dad so this is a familiar part of the world for me,” said Christopher.

He also paid tribute to the production’s “hero village” of Broughton-in-Furness which was among the Cumbrian settings chosen.

He revealed the cast and crew have been welcomed back by locals for the second series.

“The first series was very tough for the crew as it was shot from October until January so filming later between March and July this series has been far better,” said Christopher. “We’ve had a fantastic welcome from people. They seem to love the show like we all do.”
