A HEADTEACHER is leaving one north Cumbrian school to take the top job at another.

Chris McAree, who is currently head at Caldew School in Dalston, will join William Howard School in Brampton later this year.

News of his appointment was confirmed yesterday.

Jennie Wilkinson, chair of governors at Caldew School, said to parents: “It is with a heavy heart that I write to let you know that Mr McAree has been appointed to the post of headteacher at William Howard School in Brampton.

“The governing body is of course very sad to learn that we will be losing such a highly respected and successful headteacher.”

She added: “I know that the decision to move school has not been an easy one for Mr McAree to make but recognise the opportunity for career development and opportunities that the new post offers, as well as being closer to his home.

“He will be joining William Howard School in September 2016 but will continue to work tirelessly as ever for the good of our students at Caldew School until then.”

A statement on William Howard School’s website read: “The interview process for this took place earlier this week and we are delighted to inform you that Chris McAree was appointed and will take up his post in September 2016.

“Mr McAree is currently headteacher at Caldew School in Dalston, where he has been for four years.

“Mr McAree brings with him not only substantial experience but also a strong local knowledge in terms of both the area and the educational landscape.”

Mr McAree, 41, is a maths specialist. He was previously assistant headteacher at Trinity School in Carlisle before joining Caldew School as deputy headteacher.

He was appointed head of Caldew School in 2012 after it was announced that his predecessor Andy Abernethy was retiring. Mr McAree, who lives near Brampton, said: “I am looking forward to the new challenge. It was a hard decision to move but it was too good an opportunity to pass up.”

Mr McAree has also worked in Bahrain in the Middle East and in Coventry.
