One of the biggest events in Cumbria's summer calendar is less than a week away - but travellers coming to Appleby Horse Fair have been urged not to arrive too soon.

The festival, which is also one of the main gatherings of the gypsy community, begins on Thursday, with more than 40,000 people expected to flock to the Eden town.

A key message coming out of those who manage the event is for members of the gypsy and traveller community not to turn up at Appleby too early.

"Don't come too close, too soon, " said Billy Welch, a spokesman for the gypsies and travellers, who works with the organising committee.

"If you stay a little bit further out that little bit longer then it has less impact on the local towns and villages around Appleby and its residents.

"Plus it's easier for the committee, council and police to manage.

"Also please stay safe.

"Don't camp near any junctions or bends; just be conscious of where you are leaving caravans for the safety of yourselves and others."

A road closure will be in place on Sands Road, in the town centre, from 9.30am to 6pm next Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Chief Superintendent Mark Pannone, Cumbria Police's gold commander for the fair, said: "We are committed to keeping the roads as safe as possible throughout the whole fair.

"It is important for all road users to be aware of the large number of slow-moving horse-drawn vehicles that will be on the county's roads during this time and to drive accordingly.

"For those travelling on horse-drawn vehicles, please make sure that you are visible to other road users, particularly on the major routes."

Those involved say the fair is as "safe as it ever has been" and is one of the most vibrant events Cumbria hosts each year.

"It's certainly unique. I really hope it's going to be good again this year," Mr Welch added.

"It's better managed now than it was many years ago. There's plenty of parking for visitors to come down.

"There's plenty of police about as well and if anyone needs anything you can ask them.

"It's as safe as it possibly can be. We have much less trouble than other big events."

The fair officially finishes on Wednesday, June 14, but the "main days" are considered to be the Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
