A blaze of colour noise will take over a Carlisle church, as it prepares to welcome the Maasai warriors.

The Osiligi Warriors, a Maasai tribal song and dance group, will be performing at St James Church, in St James Road in Denton Holme.

The seven piece group come from the village of Oleopolos and surrounding communities in southern Kenya, and have been performing an annual tour of the UK since 2003.

The show includes authentic and exciting Maasai tribal song and dance, plus the world famous Maasai jumping.

Osiligi is the Maasai word for hope and, since 2010, the group has worked in close association with the small UK charity, Osiligi Charity Projects, to support infrastructural improvements in their local community.

The aim of the charity is to help families out of poverty through education, health and providing safe, clean drinking water, and assisting people to become more economically active.

Most of the charity’s projects are within 100 sq miles around the Osiligi Warriors’ community.

Proceeds from the concert will go towards supporting the work of this charity.

Speaking about the tour, Tajeu Minisa, leader of the Osiligi Maasai Warriors, said: “The tour is for our families, the charity is for our community.”

The Vicar of St James Church, the Revd Simon Bickersteth, said: “We are really excited that the Osiligi Warriors are visiting St James and Carlisle as part of their national tour.

"It is wonderful to know that as well as being a great evening of entertainment, proceeds from this concert will go back to the Maasai warriors home communities in Kenya, making a real difference in the lives of many people.”

Tickets for the Osiligi Warriors cost £8 for adults and £4 for children.

It takes place at the church on Wednesday, September 20. The performance starts at 7pm.
