NEW figures have revealed the numbers of men and women who have been prosecuted for not having a TV licence.

In 2016, a total of 1,050 people in Cumbria were prosecuted for not having a TV licence.

Of these, 753 were women and 297 were men.

However, of all those prosecuted, only 950 were convicted - a total of 71 women and 29 men were not convicted.

The total number of prosecutions per county with the highest number at the top ranks Cumbria as 29th out of 38 counties.

In the previous year, a total of 1,127 people were prosecuted in Cumbria - 837 women and 290 men. Cumbria was ranked 33rd out of 37 counties.

Of these, 93 cases failed to result in a conviction.

The figures were obtained by Caroline Levesque-Bartlett, the campaigner behind a petition to abolish the BBC licence fee which has attracted more than 200,000 signatures.
