A mother and two young children have escaped from their Carlisle home after a fire broke out in the early hours.

Smoke alarms in the house on Welsh Road, Harraby, sounded, alerting the family to the danger at around 3.30am today.

The blaze was confined to the tumble dryer and the family was able to escape as firefighters arrived.

Crews from the city's two fire stations - on Eastern Way and Brookside, Raffles - were sent to the scene to tackle the fire.

A crew spokesman today praised the family for having working smoke alarms in the property.
