Falklands hero Simon Weston will offer advice to fellow veterans at an event to be staged in Carlisle.

Weston has been described as the “perfect person” to speak to those adjusting to life outside the armed forces at the support session.

The Old Fire Station venue in the city centre will be the setting for the “support and engagement” event this summer.

The city council is hosting the get-together, which will allow veterans to chat to each other about their experiences.

There will be experts on hand to offer advice – as well as Weston, who will stage a talk as well as a question-and-answer session.

Lee Sherriff, councillor for communities, health and wellbeing, is one of the key players in bringing the event to Carlisle.

She said the authority was keen to support events like this.

“A lot of work we do is around preventing problems,” she said.

“It’s quite well-known there can be situations where sometimes it can be difficult when people come back into civilian life after being in the forces.

“It can also be hard for them to admit when things are not 100 per cent.

Lee Sherriff “Providing an event like this, an atmosphere where they can come along and feel comfortable, can help.

“It’s a relaxed atmosphere in which to receive help and advice.”

The authority has been awarded cash from the Carlisle and Eden Community Safety Partnership – an alliance of different public organisations – to help stage the event which is due to be held on June 1.

Miss Sherriff added: “There will be people there on hand from different organisations – and there’s the chance for a bit of networking.

“If you speak to people who have been in your position, it could help with any problems you might be having.”

On the star guest, she added: “I think it’s fantastic that Simon Weston is coming along.

“He is somebody who is very well known.

“He’s gone through major trauma and come out the other side.

“He’s the perfect person to come along.”
