Science-mad students from an Egremont school met Professor Brian Cox in London ahead of a science festival in September.

Eleven students from West Lakes Academy were invited to the capital to take part in the annual St Paul's Way Trust Science Summer School.

It is the partner event to Infinity Science and Technology Festival which takes place at the academy on September 27.

The pupils received a sneak preview of what Infinity will have to offer, including meeting Professor Brian Cox, TED-style talks and taking part in practical workshops.

Lord Andrew Mawson OBE, co-founder of the Science Summer School, said: "We were very pleased to have a very lively and engaged contingent from West Lakes Academy attend the St Paul’s Way Science Summer School for the second year.

"We handed over the baton to the West Lakes team and look forward to the Infinity event in Cumbria at the end of September."

The festival aims to inspire 13 and 14-year-olds from across the county to pursue careers in STEM subjects - science, technology, engineering and maths.

Professor Cox, BBC broadcaster and professor of particle physics at the University of Manchester, is the headline act at the festival.

There will be motivating talks, hands-on experiments and workshops, as well as information on employment opportunities, training options and career paths at the festival.

And an evening reception, will include interviews with scientists and exhibitions to engage with parents and encourage them to support pupils.
