Detectives have arrested a second man in connection with a "serious" sexual assault which happened in Carlisle.

The incident took place in the early hours of Thursday, sometime between midnight and 2am, in St Ninians Road, Upperby.

On Friday officers arrested a man in his 50s from the Carlisle area in connection with the incident and was later released with no further action.

A second man, in his 40s and also from the Carlisle area, has now been arrested in connection with this incident.

A spokesperson for Cumbria Police said: "He has since been released under investigation while officers continue with their enquiries."

Those investigating are continuing to ask that anyone who was in the area at the time of the offence, who may have information, to come forward.

"The incident occurred in the early hours following the England v Croatia match and it is believed there were a number of people in the Upperby and Harraby area at that time," the spokesperson added.

"Officers are specifically looking to identify and speak with a couple who are believed to have been walking together from Upperby towards Old Harraby along St Ninians Road at some time between 1am and 1.30am.

"The people sought may have come into contact with the victim or suspect, whether together or separately."

Officers are also keen to speak to a teenage girl, believed to be 14 or 15-years-old, who was in the Upperby area around the same time. She may have been wearing a red top and was possibly wearing a denim jacket and using her mobile phone as a torch.
