A CUMBRIAN mountain rescue team is ensuring it is better prepared for a major flooding incident.

Members of Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team will be training at the rivers in the town tomorrow.

A month's rain fell in the county in one day this week, causing chaos as roads were blocked, schools closed, people left stranded and events called off.

Honister's rain gauge topped 200mm as heavy overnight rain from Tuesday into Wednesday triggered travel problems.

In Cockermouth, Environment Agency staff were called in to close floodgates and people put in place their own flood resilience measures as river levels on the Derwent and Cocker rose.

In a message to reassure local people, on Friday, the team wrote on Facebook: "We know people have been very worried about the rain and the river levels over the last few days - so a warning that you might see us out and about around town and near the river on Sunday.

"It's only a practice. We'll be training for what we'd do as part of a major incident like flooding, so we're better prepared if the worst ever happens again.

"The good news is the river levels have fallen back to close to their normal range today, so hopefully Friday evening's rain won' t cause any more problems, and we can all have a calm and uneventful weekend."
