Businesses and residents in a town centre have been left with no water because of a burst pipe on the high street.

United Utilities workers are currently at the scene of the problem, in High Street, Wigton.

The fault was reported about 2.30pm today.

It is unclear how many customers are affected at this stage.

A spokesman for the company said: "You may have noticed that the water is coming out of your tap slower than usual or may have gone off altogether.

"We’ve been out to see what might be causing this and found a burst pipe on High Street.

"We’ve already got a team of engineers on site who are working hard to fix the pipe and we will update this message of any changes."

They added: "We’re sorry for the trouble this may be causing you and we will get your taps flowing normally again as quickly as we can."

Several businesses, including hairdressers, have reported that their working day has been disrupted because of the problem.

The problem was resolved about 4.30pm.
