Police investigating an alleged handbag snatch where an elderly woman ended up hurt have confirmed that no crime has been committed.
Officers had been looking into the case of an 81-year-old woman who was found injured in Penrith town centre and claimed her handbag was taken.
Great-grandmother Hilda Lee suffered bleeding on her brain, a fractured jaw on both sides, broken nose, cheekbone and eye socket.
She's since been in the care of a team of doctors at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.
Police were investigating reports that a person walked off with Hilda's handbag following the incident outside the Costa coffee shop in Angel Lane about 1.20pm on Wednesday.
Witnesses said they heard a thud and saw Mrs Lee fall face down onto the concrete path. Another older woman was then seen to pick up Mrs Lee's handbag from the floor and walk off.
A spokesman for Cumbria Police told the News & Star : "We have conducted enquiries and we are satisfied that no criminal offences occurred.
"It's believed that the woman suffered a trip or a fall."
It is also believed that the woman seen walking away with a handbag was in possession of her own.
