The Punch Bowl pub in Great Broughton has won the prestigious CAMRA West Cumbria's pub of the year award.

CAMRA also awarded the Castle Inn in Cockermouth with the cider pub of the year whilst the Swan, in Kirkgate, Cockermouth won the pub of the year runners up certificate.

One of only three community run pubs in Cumbria, the Punch Bowl Inn is managed by volunteers from the village.

CAMRA vice chairman Stephen Walker presented the award to TV presenter Kim Inglis on July 7 in honour of her father, Peter Inglis, who was instrumental in the process which led to the Punch Bowl Inn becoming a community pub.

Peter's daughter, Kim, said it was a great honour to accept the award: "Mum was asked to do the presentation, but had already committed to something else on that day, so it was a huge honour to me to step into mum's shoes and to accept the award for dad and all at the Punch Bowl.

"It is lovely that they all thought so much of dad and he would have been so proud that they received this award, he would have been dancing up and down the street. He put his heart and soul into that community pub. But it is a community pub and the award is for everyone involved, there were a few tears and lots of laughs on Saturday.

"The Punch Bowl has got dad's photo in it and clippings from the Times & Star and mum goes in and my son goes to the quiz there and the guys are fantastic with us. The Punch Bowl is an important part of our lives."

Peter Inglis's friend and volunteer at The Punch Bowl, John Wilson, said: "We have shareholders that each put in £100 or so, we do not make a profit, we put the money back in to decoration, furniture, pub toilets that you would expect in a good hotel and several thousand pounds back into village charities.

"The driving force behind it was Peter Inglis, he was a very successful businessman at Pentagon Chemicals and he drove the community pub and was the automatic chairman.

"It was an enormous shock that last year, just before his 71st birthday, as a very fit man, he had a cardiac arrest and passed away. Much of the time the pub has earned its reputation with CAMRA was when Peter was in charge and it's only right and proper that Kim receive the award on behalf of her dad."

All profits from the pub are put back into local charities, this has resulted in over £10,000 being donated over the past five years.
