Declaring war on litter and graffiti will form part of a week when people donate their time to help charitable causes in Carlisle.

And one city police community support officer is appealing for help in cleaning up a green area in Denton Holme.

PCSO Peter Murphy is on the hunt for green fingered volunteers to help him.

He wants to clean a green beside a footpath between Richardson Street and Ferguson Place.

He is going to be in charge of giving this area a makeover next Saturday as part of Give a Day to the City 2017.

He will be leading the makeover and is calling for assistance from the public to join him in rejuvenating the area.

He said: "The green area in Denton Holme is currently a magnet for litter and graffiti.

"I hope that by spending time cleaning it up and some minor gardening attention that this could be an area that local community can be proud of.

"The desired outcome is to create a garden for community volunteers to maintain the upkeep, which will make the area much more pleasing to the eye.

"To do this I will need the public’s help and I would appreciate anyone that can spare some time next Saturday."

Mr Murphy will be on site from 10am to 4pm.

The week runs from June 24 to July 2 and people are being invited to give up their time to help support projects that they feel passionate about.

Assistance is needed at a variety of projects. These include: working in the gardens of the Eden Valley Hospice, creating a garden for a flood affected resident, transforming a derelict city centre space into an allotment, helping to provide access to woodland walks at Oak Tree Animals' Charity at Wetheral Shields and making the Old Harraby area look better with a litter pick.

Last year's event took place six months after the floods.

Fourteen projects were completed, ranging from clearing stones from the football pitches of the Sheepmount, refurbishing the skate park and hosting a street party for the Queen's 90th Birthday.
